5/27/09
Two-thousand eight CJHS graduate Mannie DeCastro is proving herself to be a softball standout at the college level. DeCastro, a three-time All-State catcher while at Carl Junction High School, is already receiving honors in only her freshman year at Pittsburg State University.
DeCastro was recently named a 2009 National Fastpitch Coaches Association Third-Team All American. DeCastro was an at-large selection to the third team as selected by NFCA coaches on the All American selection committee from regions across the country.
DeCastro is only the fifth in PSU history to be named to the All-American team and the first since 1997.
DeCastro was also named the MIAA Freshman of the Year and ranks in the top ten of every offenisve category. She leads the leagues with doubles with .47 per game, which is also the third-best in the nation. DeCastro is hitting .397 on the season and leads the Gorillas in hits (62), runs (47), doubles (25), slugging percentage (.705) and on-base percentage (.463). She shares the team lead for home runs at seven.
In addition, DeCastro has already set a new PSU and MIAA records for doubles in a season with 25.
