5/20/09

In what was not only a district baseball playoff game, but a Big 8 Conference game, the Carl Junction Bulldogs won both over East Newton, Monday afternoon.  Playing in the Class 3 District 12 Tournament at Lamar City Park, the No. 12 seeded Bulldogs defeated East Newton, 14-4, in five innings, in what was also a make-up of a Big 8 game.

The Bulldogs jumped ahead 2-0 after getting singles from Seth Spencer and Jack Luton; both had RBI singles in the first inning.

The Patriots (6-12) trailed the entire game, but made it close on two occasions.  Down 2-0 after one inning, the Patriots got singles by Chuck Carpenter and Mason Whitman, before Taylor Hunt hit a sacrifice fly to make it 2-1 in the top of the second inning.

The Bulldogs answered with four runs in the second inning to expand their lead again.  Carl Junction got singles from Logan Deem, Jordan Carden and Matt Thompson all singled, with Thompson driving in Deem.  Payton Walker hit a sacrifice fly for another run, before Travis Green hit a 2-run single to make it 6-1.

East Newton, trailing by five heading into the top of the third inning, struck for three runs to make it a two-run game.  East Newton got an RBI single from Colby Brown for the first run.  Carpenter reached on an error and both runners scored on Whitman's 2-run single, making it 6-4.

Carl Junction then scored five runs in the third and three more in the fourth to pull away.

In the third inning, Carl Junction got six hits and took advantage of two key errors by East Newton.  Luton singled and moved up on Deem's walk.  Carden then an RBI single to score Luton and a fielding error allowed Deem to score as well.  Carden then scored when Thompson singled and that was missplayed in the outfield.

Walker singled in Thompson, Jake Stevenson doubled, and both Stevenson and Walker scored on Green's 2-run single for Carl Junction in the fourth inning.

Tyler Spencer started for East Newton, pitching into the third inning.  He struck out two and walked two, while giving up 11 hits.  DeWayne McBride pitched the third inning and Brown threw the fourth inning.  Nathan Eddy got the victory for Carl Junction, giving up nine hits in five innings, while striking out six and not walking anyone.
